Roger L Jones

On November 13, 2003, Roger L. Jones, Sr. of Newark, DE went home to be with the Lord. He passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 55 years old.

Roger was born in Wilmington, DE on March 7, 1948. He was a 1966 graduate of DeLaWarr High School and also the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology. He then served for 4 years in the U.S. Navy, stationed in VA and FL.

Roger's next 18 years were spent working for DuPont Engineering at both the Louviers site and the Stine-Haskell labs. After leaving DuPont, he worked for several engineering firms in the area, most recently as a facility project engineer at the AstraZeneca plant in Newark.

Roger felt privileged to serve his community in various ways over the years - as a PTA president, a Newark Community Development Committee member, a civic association president, and a campaign manager for Senator James Neal.

His great love of service and the outdoors and his dedication to passing this on to young people was best expressed by his 22-year association with the Boy Scouts of America, especially his years as a scoutmaster for Troop #603, Newark, and finally, as a member of its troop committee.

Roger's enthusiasm for fishing, his love of history, his extraordinary sense of humor, his sense of morality, his kindness to others, and mostly his great love for his family will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Jane (Williams) Jones; and his mother-in-law, Felicia (Kowalewski) Talarowski.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 32 years, Louise (Talarowski) Jones; 3 children, Roger L. Jones, Jr. and his wife, Vanessa, of Odessa DE, Felicia Fretchel and her husband, Jack, of Claymont DE and Jessica Williams and her husband, David, of Newark DE; sister, Terryll Hayslett and her husband, Jack, of Hurricane WV; nephew, Andrew Hayslett of Hurricane WV; father-in-law, William Talarowski and his wife, Sue; 4 sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Duszak, Felicia Wilson and her husband, Guy, Jozefa Jackson and her husband, Chris, and Dianna Thomas and her husband, Richard; 6 nieces, Barbara Duszak, Felicia Stillson, Sarah and Julia Jackson and Mary and Isabella Thomas; and many friends.
