The convent was originally the Cecil County Almshouse from 1776 to the 1950s in Childs MD and unmarked burials took place in a small part of the burial grounds in which they called "potters field".
In 1950, with the support of their brothers, the Oblates of St Francis de Sales, Sister Bertha Gonzaga and her companion sisters journeyed from France to begin a new mission of education ministry in America. In 1952, the sisters converted the donated Cecil County Almshouse and established their convent, naming it "Villa Aviat".
