Founder and First President of Tottenham Hotspur Soccer Club. He taught Bible classes at All Hallows Church, Tottenham, London, and gave accommodation, advice and assistance to the local boys. In 1882 he created a soccer team, which he named "Hotspurs", as a means of providing them with a useful occupation. He became the club's treasurer, and in addition to be being a patron, served as its first president for eleven years. In 1894 he left London and moved to Dover, Kent, to live with a sister who ran a hotel. He then fell on hard times, and later developed severe heart problems and lost his eyesight. He died penniless in the local workhouse and was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave. In 2007, the Tottenham Tribute Trust paid for the erection of a headstone on his grave, which was unveiled in a ceremony attended by his descendants and the executive director of the modern club.
