Dr. Calvin Bates, aged eight-seven years, of Cambridge, probably the oldest practicing physician in southeastern Ohio, died Tuesday morning of last week in the St. Francis Hospital, after a brief illness of pneumonia. He was admitted to the hospital Monday morning in serious condition. Dr. Bates was born at Mt. Ephraim, Noble County, son of Ezekiel and Jane Yoho Bates, and early in life taught school in Noble County. In 1886 he graduated from the Cincinnati College of Medicine. He practiced his profession in Lore City and Senceaville for many years. In 1911, Dr. Bates moved to Cambridge and practiced medicine there until the time of his death at which time he also held the position of jail physician. He served Guernsey County several times as coroner. Dr. Bates was violinist of ability and his hobby was making violins. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two children Oscar H. Bates of Cambridge and Mrs. Cary Greenmayer of Canton, one grandson, four granddaughters, five great-grand-sons and one great-granddaughter. His wife, Mrs. Alice Cary Price Bates, whom he married in 1880, died in 1933. Two sons and one daughter are deceased. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon and interment was made in Northwood Cemetery. Thursday 6 April 1944 Noble County Leader Caldwell.
