"Garrett" was an important name in this Stanley family line, and it is seen among other Stanley families of the same era who settled in other AL counties. Garrett gave it to his second son as a middle name, then gave it to his youngest son as his first given name. (Both children lived to be old, so it was a deliberate choice.)
Garrett's middle initial "S." is found in his enlistment papers for Co. A, 18th Ala Infantry Regiment, CSA.
Source: A set of publications placed by the Sons of Confederate Veterans - "The Roster of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865." He is in Volume XIV, 'Shackleford, ____ to Sudduth, Zadoc M., Jr.,' edited by Janet B. Hewett, Broadfoot Publishing Company, Wilmington, NC, 1996
Courtesy of Taylor Benton: "National Archive records show that he enlisted in CO. A 18th Al. Infantry on 7-22-1861, and that he did not desert the CSA, but was medically discharged for "severe attack of typhia (sic) pneumonia" on 1-7-1862. Records further show that he enlisted in the 1st Fla. Cavalry USA on 3-23-1864 and remained in that outfit until honorably discharged on 11-17-1865. He later received a pension for his Union army service certificate # 736477. After his death, his widow continued to receive the pension under certificate # 775584 until her death."
Sometime after 1870, Garrett moved his family to Covington County, AL where his brother Joshua was already living. He later successfully homesteaded land in Covington County, 159.2 acres on 18 Jan 1891. He was a farmer all of his working life. A Garrett Stanley also homesteaded 80.02 acres on 17 Dec 1906, but that one is likely his son Garrett.
"Local History: Uncle Garrett Stanley is 79, his wife whose maiden name was Harriette Taylor and is age 77. Mr. Stanley was born and reared in Alabama, and has lived in Covington county more than 50 years. Mrs. Stanley was born in South Carolina and reared in this Covington County. This couple was married 54 years ago, August 15, 1906."
