BIOGRAPHY:

GARRETT [GARROTT] WILLIAMS, B. 1788, D. 1870 - A Farmer in Bulloch County, Georgia.

GARRETT [GARROTT] WILLIAMS, born 1788, died 1870, was the son of GARRETT WILLIAMS, SR. (ca. 1765- ca 1818). His father was 23 years of age at the time of his birth. The name and identity of his mother is not known at the time of this writing (The search is still on for some trace of her life and family, and will continue). On August 30, 1811, GARRETT [GARROTT] WILLIAMS (1788-1870) married CHARLOTTE CHARITY JONES (Reference: A list of marriages copied from the original records maintained in the Bulloch County Courthouse in Statesboro, Georgia).

It is known, there was at least one child, a son, from the marriage of GARRETT [GARROT] WILLIAMS and CHARLOTTE CHARITY JONES (They were married 12 years before they were blessed by a child), named WILLIAM WILEY WILLIAMS, born 27 DEC 1823, died 10 JUN 1862. This only known son married ROXY ANN LEE and together they had eight (8) children, five sons and three daughters, before his life was cut short due to the War of Southern Independence, when he, serving as a Captain in the Confederate States Army, was killed in-action on 10 JUN 1862 at the Battle of James Island, South Carolina.

GARRETT [GARROTT] WILLIAMS (1788-1870), was the first born child of his parents. He had at least six (6) known siblings. The family is still searching for life traces of one of his sisters, Delilah, and one of his brothers, Lewis. The names of his six (6) siblings are listed below, in birth order:

1. CENITH “SENCY” WILLIAMS, born Circa 1799, d. in 1869 in probably Bulloch County, Georgia as her husband had died in 1844, in Early County, Georgia. Although, her one nickname was "Sency," most all of her contemporaries knew her by her nickname "LUCY". She married John Thomas BRIANT JONES (1796-1844) on 23 DEC 1819 in Bulloch County, Georgia. She and her husband moved to EARLY County, Georgia sometime after the birth or their first two children. In Early County, Georgia they farmed and they had a total of 11 children (Brazil Williams, Bridger David, Josiah G., Cenia, Mary, Deborah, Buckner Barry, Elizabeth, Versanory, Sarah V., and John Thomas Briant Jones, Jr.).

2. ROLAND “ROWLAND” WILLIAMS, B. ABOUT 1802, D. 18 OCT 1883. Married SUSANNAH LEWIS on 29 APR 1824 (Reference: list of Bulloch County, Georgia Marriages 1796-1850, Georgia Vital Records, extracted from Bulloch County, Georgia Court Records). Roland and Susannah's first three children, Sarah, Robert W., and Nancy E., were born in Bulloch County, Georgia. Then, about year 1834, they had a desire to settle in the new Territory of Florida and moved Madison County. Florida was admitted to the United States as the 27th State on March 3, 1845, eleven years after they moved there. They had seven (7) additional children there (William, Redding Rowland, Rolin Lewis, Susan, James P., Pricilla P, and Madison W). After Susannah died Roland married 2nd, a widow, Frances Missouri Gramling Blakley and one child was born to this union (Lighter Leachman Williams (b. 31 MAR 1869, d. 19 MAR 1968). Roland Williams (1802-1883) was interred in HICKORY GROVE METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY, Pinetta, Madison County, Florida, without the benefit of a stone marker. Perhaps someday his ancestors will have a stone memorial marker placed there as a memorial for his becoming an early pioneer of Madison County, Florida.

3. DAVID ALBERT WILLIAMS, b. 01 JAN 1806, d. 06 APR 1886, buried Lower Lotts Creek Church Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia. Married Margaret Lavenia Jones (1810-1874). There was, at least, one child (a daughter) from this marriage, Rebecca Eugenia Williams (1830-1921). This daughter lived a long life, was married three times, and had, at least, eleven (11) children (4 daughters and 7 sons).

4. JOHN G. WILLIAMS, b. 28 MAR 1809, d. 26 DEC 1884, buried Lower Lotts Creek Church Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia. Married 1st Frances H. C. Nessmith (1809-1874). There were Eleven (11) children from this marriage. After his 1st wife's death, he married 2nd Lucinda “Lucy” Lanier Lee (She was the widow of James Ludell Lee (1806-1864)) on the 8th of April, 1875). His 2nd wife is interred in the LEE FAMILY CEMETERY, Metter, Candler County, Georgia - REFERENCE FAG MEMORIAL# 71518206). One of his 2nd wife’s daughters, Sarah Ann Lee (1839-1920), married her 2nd husband’s son, James M. Williams (1833-1884).

5. LEWIS WILLIAMS, b. About 1817, d. Unknown, burial location unknown. Still searching for a trace of his life.

6. DELILAH WILLIAMS, b. Unknown, d. Unknown. Searching for a trace of her life.

Two of Garrett [Garrott] Williams's brothers, David Albert Williams (1806-1886) and John G. Williams (1809-1884) are buried very close to his grave in this same Cemetery. This Cemetery was owned and operated by the Lower Lotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church, where his brother, John G. Williams (1809-1844) was an Elder (Pastor) for 40 years, which, most probably, accounts for the large number of kinfolks with the family name WILLIAMS interred in the cemetery.

This biography, a WORK IN PROGRESS, was written by William Kenneth Bowen, September 23, 2017, the great great grandson Garrett [Garrott] Williams' younger sibling John G. Williams (1809-1884). Updates to this biography will be posted as new factual information is validated. Last update, Tuesday, December89, 2020.

GARRETT WILLIAMS, SR.

1788 - 1870

(Comments: The deceased was named after his father Garrett Williams (1765-1818), therefore the SR. on the monument is, perhaps, a mistake for a son with this name is unknown, and has not been found, at the time of this writing.)
