Lewis served his community in many different ways.

He built the first building in Altamont for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

In 1917, Lewis began working as the Assistant Postmaster at the Harrican, TN office. He was appointed Altamont's Postmaster on November 4, 1920, serving until December 1931.

He was Mayor of Altamont and Grundy County Registrar of Deeds during intervals from 1932 to 1956.

Additionally, he operated a furniture store for many years.

The house he built for his family still stands.
