In 1917, Lewis began working as the Assistant Postmaster at the Harrican, TN office. He was appointed Altamont's Postmaster on November 4, 1920, serving until December 1931.
He was Mayor of Altamont and Grundy County Registrar of Deeds during intervals from 1932 to 1956.
Additionally, he operated a furniture store for many years.
