Born Nov. 15, 1916, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Herbert O. and Edna Deitz Whitener.
A member of Cross and Crown Lutheran Church in Matthews, he worked
for the Hickory Daily Record for 15 years and the Evening Star Newspaper in Washington, D.C.
A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served in England and France and was a community volunteer.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mildred Canipe Whitener; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Ann Whitener of Charlotte; two daughters and a son-in-law, Judith Bronson of Charlotte and Linda and Jun Ganela of Woodbridge, Va.; a brother, Ray A. Whitener of Hickory; a sister, Rachel Jordan of Charlotte; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Revs. Mike Deal and Linda Nelson at 3 p.m. Sunday at his church.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Bronson, Thomas Bronson, Bradley Mabe, Dan Wallace, Donald Whitener and Faustino Ganela.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
