Funeral services for Leota Mahnke were held Mon., Nov. 17, 1997 at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Lyons. She died November 14 at Oakland Heights at the age of 77 years. The Rev. Gerald Roggow officiated at the service. Carol Schlichting was organist. Casket bearers were Darwin Peterson, Dean Peterson, Gaylerd Wascher, Leon Toelle, Gale Mahnke and Steve Mahnke. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery. Palmquist-Pelan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Leota Mae Mahnke was born May 25, 1920, in West Point, to William and Olvia (Ludwig) Kuester. Leota attended District 48 in rural West Point though the eighth grade. On January 22, 1940, Leota and Milford Mahnke were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Beemer. They made their home on a farm in the Oakland-Craig area until their retirement in 1981 when they moved to the Oakwood Apartments in Oakland. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Lyons, where she was a past Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher.
Survivors include her husband:; Milford of Oakland; daughter & son- in-law; Marvelyn & Denny Spangler of Fremont; two sons & daughter- in-law; Lyle Mahnke of Fremont, Ray & Trudy Mahnke of Pender; sister & Brother-in-law; Willeta & Myron Peterson of Fremont; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter.
