This is Col. Gene Markham with his P-51 Mustang "Mr. Gary" (named after his son). Ray borrowed this plane because his Mustang was in for repair after an emergency landing in France three days earlier). Ray flew this plan on his last mission. 2/24/45

Lt. Raymond Hilgenberg flew with the 351st Fighter Squadron/353rd Fighter Group 8th AAF out of Raydon, England. Lt. Hilgenberg flew P-51D "Mr. Gary" the regular aircraft of Capt. Gene Markham. On February 24, 1945 he was shot down and KIA over Germany. He was credited with a shared aerial victory.

1LT Raymond Hilgenberg Veteran
