Amos E. Atherton, 85, of 30 Cloverleaf Court, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg. Born Aug. 28, 1923, in Sylvan, Pa., he was the son of the late Clarence H. and Grace M. Keefer Atherton. He retired in 1970 from Letterkenny Army Depot. He was a member of Maple Grove Church of God in Mercersburg, Pa., and attended Greencastle Church of God. He was a US Army vetreran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Neil Atherton, whom he married Sept. 7, 1949; one daughter, Linda K. Keefer of Clear Spring; four sons; Larry M. Atherton, Travis W. Atherton and Tommy E. Keyser, all of Mercersburg, and Henry F. Keyser of Cove Gap, Pa.; one sister, Alice Hensley of Harrisonville, Pa; two brothers, Frank Atherton and Darrel Atherton, both of Mercersburg; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Keyser; and two sisters, Lottie Robinson and Mary Clever. Services will be Friday at 1 pm at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg. The Rev. Floyd E. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Mercersburg, with graveside military services by Charles Nitterhouse VFW 1599 Honor Guard. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
