RAYMOND BENJAMIN HOWELL

Raymond (RAY) Benjamin Howell, 86 of Greenwood Road, Spruce Pine, died Tuesday, May 3,2005 at his home.

He was the son of the late Troy and Elsie Jarrett Howell. A life long resident of Mitchell and Yancey Counties, he was the proprietor of a store at Newdale at the age of 18. An Army veteran of World War ll, he served for four years and was stationed overseas. After returning from the Army, Ray owned and operated Micaville General Store and started Howell Hardware on upper street in Spruce Pine in 1949. It was later expanded to include furniture and appliances. In 1973 he started Howell Real Estate Company, which continues in operation today. Mr Ray Howell was a memeber of Center Baptist Church of Spruce Pine where he served as Deacon and Trustee. A 25 year member and past President of the Kiwanis Club, he was also a member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Nationa Bank and member of the Avery-Mitchell Library Board. Ray Howell was also a Christmas tree grower and Cattle farmer.
