Mary Jewell, one of Mishawaka's best known women, aged 84 years, died suddenly at 10 o'clock Saturday evening at the home of her son, George B. Avery, of 308 East Seventh Street. She was taken ill at 6 o'clock, but rallied. Up to Saturday she had enjoyed fairly good health.

She was formerly Mary Allen and was born in New York state in 1827. While living in that state she was married to William C. Avery, who died about 53 years ago. Mrs. Avery came to Mishawaka 52 years ago and has been a resident of this city ever since that time. She was later married to Daniel B. Jewell, who died 15 years ago.

To the first union three children were born. Two sons George B. at whose home she died and Milan W. Avery, also of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. William Seifert, of Madison township. She also leaves one stepson, Frank Avery, of this city.

Mrs. Jewell lived for almost 50 years at the old Avery home at East Third and Race Streets, which is at the present owned by Ralph Smith. She had been a member of the First Methodist Church of this city for a number of years and was very prominent in church work before old age made it impossible for her to attend.

The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Methodist Church. Rev. W.B. Freeland, pastor of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Ferrisville cemetery south of the city.

The above obituary was printed in the South Bend Tribune, June 5, 1911.
NOTE: Mary was the step mother to John L Avery and William F. Avery.

***I am still looking for the parents of Mary Allen Avery-Jewell. Her father was J. Allen. That's is all I can find. Any suggestions would be great.
