JAMES FRANKLIN HALBERSTADT

James Franklin Halberstadt, Jr., 71, 227 S. First St., Adams County Service Officer for Veterans and also active in historical and genealogy circles for many years, died suddenly at 10:47 p.m. Saturday at the Adams County Memorial Hospital. He was stricken at his home earlier in the evening.

The well-known Decatur resident served as Chairman of the Adams County Bicentennial Committee and was a member of the following organizations: Adams County Historical Society, Franklin County Historical Society, the Allen County Genealogy Society, the Society of Indiana Pioneers and a former member of the Board of Governors, the Somerset Chapter of Magna Charta Barons, the National Society of Colonial Clergy, the National Society of Colonial Wars.

Mr. Halberstadt was also presently organizing the Decatur Chapter of the General Society of the War of 1812.

A 1932 graduate of Pleasant Mills High School, Mr. Halberstadt served in the U.S. Army during WWII, in the Harvester Battalion. He served on three occasions as commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 91, was a member of American Legion Post 43, was organizing president of the Anthony Halberstadt Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and presently historian of the State Society of the S.A.R.

He was organizing president of the Rivarre Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution, organizing governor of the Indiana branch of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, and state president of the organization. He also organized the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Morgan Reid Chapter of Adams County, and was a member of the T.P.A.

Mr. Halberstadt was a charter member of the Pleasant Mills Baptist Church.

He worked at International Harvester for 11 years until 1947, held a partnership in the Willshire Hardware in Willshire, O., sold McNess products for several years, trucked produce a number of years, and also sold used cars in Decatur for a few years. He was also involved in the genealogy field for veterans.

"Jim", as he was known to his many friends, also was an avid sports fan.

Born in Adams County on Oct. 3, 1912, he was a son of James Franklin and Flava Ploughe-Halberstadt, and was married Oct. 2, 1939 to Willodean Ellenberger; she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Douglas D., Bluffton, and Max G., Fort Wayne; two sisters, Mrs. Virgil (Ruth) Neuenschwander, Decatur and Mrs. Ed (Mary) Melching, Pleasant Mills; and two grandchildren.

One son, Kent Lee, and one brother, Thomas Halberstadt, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Zwick, Bolt & Jahn Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard W. Sprunger and Rev. John F. Maxwell officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 today. The S.A.R. will hold services following the regular funeral services. Military graveside services will be held.

Preferred memorials are to the Pleasant Mills Baptist Church.
