Joel Johnson was the son of Elizabeth Cornelius and Joel Johnson.

Joel married Lavina Lintermoot March 28, 1850. His second wife was Lydia Krick married on May 12, 1870 in Franklin, Iowa.

Joel and Lavina were the parents of: Catherine born c. 1851 Ohio, Amanda born c. 1852 Ohio, Oscar born 16 Oct 1853 Ohio, Scott born c. 1856 Ohio, Smith born c. 1858 Iowa, Samantha born c. 1860 Iowa, and Flora born c. 1867 Iowa. His youngest daughter Louisa Johnson was born in 1873 to Joel and his second wife Lydia.

The Van Wert Times, Friday, October, 26, 1894
"Mr Joel Johnson died at his home in Abanaka last Monday, from paralysis, aged 68 years, 3 months and 29 days. The deceased was born in Hardin county, and moved to Van Wert county when it was a vast wilderness, locating in Harrison township, where he resided until 1854 when he removed to Iowa, from which state he entered the service of his country. He served in the war until the close after which he returned to Ohio, locating in Willshire township where he resided until his death. He leaves a wife, three daughters, one son and a large circle of friends to mourn his demise. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Kitacofe, after which the remains were interred in the Greenbrier cemetery. The family have the sincerest sympathy of the entire community in this their sad bereavement.
P.H. Krick and Smith Johnson and families, of Lima, attended the funeral of Joel Johnson, last Wednesday.
