Richard was 8th of 10 children of Ambrose MULLIS, Sr. and Nancy CASS. Although born in TN, his family were long-time residents of the Wilkes and Iredell County NC area and returned there after his birth.
After his mother's death in 1829, Richard migrated to Indiana with his brother Ambrose and sisters Jane and Sarah.

Richard married second to Elenor "Ellen" SMITH 13 Dec 1842 in Hancock Co. IN. They spent their life in various places in Indiana including Hancock, Fayette and Tipton County, then relocated to Henry County, MO, after 1880.
