Minnie Howard Penney, a long time resident of Hurricane, Utah, passed away from her loving family on Friday, December 27, 2008. Her loss is overshadowed by the love and affection her family has for her and that she gave to us.

Minnie was the youngest of ten children born to George E. and Charlotte Howard in Nephi, Utah, on May 18, 1919.

A lifelong educator, Minnie received an Associate of Science diploma from Snow College in 1939, and a Teaching Diploma from BYU in 1940. Throughout her teaching career she remained committed to the pursuit of knowledge and teaching excellence and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from BYU in 1967.

Upon receiving her teaching certification, she began her teaching career in Delta, Utah, where she met her beloved husband Blaine. They were married on May 27, 1942. Later that year, they were sealed on December 28, in the Manti Temple. Over their 54 year marriage Blaine and Minnie raised four wonderful and successful children while living in Meadow, Utah. Blaine and Minnie later moved to Kanosh, Utah. Her family was her pride and joy.

In addition to being fondly remembered by the generations of students she taught over her 30 year tenure teaching Head Start and Kindergarten, Minnie will always be recognized as the first teacher in the State of Utah for the Head Start Program. She took great pride in knowing she was instrumental in starting children on the path to successful academic education. Her teaching excellence did not go without notice as Minnie received several awards, with the most notable being the Millard County Teacher of the Year and National Education Outstanding Teacher.

Away from family and school, Minnie was dedicated to the LDS Church and held many Ward and Stake positions. After retirement, Minnie and Blaine served in the Florida-Tampa Mission. Upon completing this calling, they moved to Hurricane, Utah, where they were both very active in the community and the Church and cherished all their friends and the opportunity to live near their youngest daughter, Carolyn Dobson, and her family.

Minnie is survived by her sister, Martha Collett of St. George, Utah; her four children, Peggy (Carl) Nixon, Nibley, Utah, Howard Blaine (the late Karen) Penney, Yerington, Nevada, Carol Sue (Jim) Fowler, San Francisco, California, and Carolyn (Loy) Dobson, St. George, Utah; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren with an additional 3 that will arrive this spring.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2009, at the Hurricane, Utah LDS Chapel. Interment will be held at the Hurricane Cemetery.
