Obituary John A. Whitaker
Funeral service es were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 11, at Star School, Southwest of Thayer Kansas, for John Alderman Whitaker, 74, former pioneer resident of this vicinity and a former well known Thayerite. The service was conducted by Dr. J.A. DeMoss of Thayer.
Music for the funeral was sung by Mrs. Earl Parsons, Mrs. Arch Perkins, Elmer Dryden and Fred Barnes of the Star Neighborhood, with Mrs. Dryden at the piano. They sang (Just Inside the Eastern Gate,) (Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,) and (Overthere.) Interment was in the Star Cemetery with the following old neighbors serving as pallbearers: Eugene Barkus, Frank and Arch Perkins, R.G. Tuttle, Nat Anderson and Fred Barnes.
The deceased was an Uncle of R.G. Tuttle and an Uncle by marriage of Mrs. E.G. Buchanan of this city and also had numerous relatives in the Star and Morehead vicinities in Newark Township, Wilson County, KS, many of whom attended the funeral Wednesday.
Mr. Whitaker was born January 29, 1858 near Cincinnati, Ohio and came to Kansas with his parents at the age of eleven years, where they settled on what is known as the old Whitaker place near Star school. There he grew to young manhood and was married to Miss Mary Rosetta Welch on February 6, 1879. They were the parents of ten children.
He farmed for many years in the Star neighborhood and then moved to the old Mills place, just east of Thayer. Later he moved into town and for years was employed at the Thayer Mill by M.S. Powell. he also did much threshing in this community and for some time operated a dray line here.
Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker left Thayer more than twenty years ago for Oklahoma. In recent years they had lived on a farm near Claremore, OK where Mr. Whitaker, Sunday morning, Jan. 8, 1933, came to his death. He had been in poor health for the last several years, but his death was sudden, due to heart trouble.
He leaves to mourn his death his widow, Mrs. Mary Whitaker; two daughters, Mrs. Rebecca Maude Wright and Mrs. Charles H. Swaney of Santa Barbra California; another daughter, Mrs. Carl Browning of Chanute, Kansas; and the following sons, Robert R. Whitaker of Clarmore Oklahoma; W.G. Whitaker of LaHarpe, Kansas; W.A. Whitaker of Charlotte, Michigan; and Preston S. Whitaker of the home address. Three children died in infancy. C.V. Whitaker of Los Angeles and Wake Whitaker of Neodesha, Kansas are surviving brothers and Mrs. Anna Bryson of Neodesha, Kansas is a surviving sister. He also leaves numerous grand and great grandchildren and a host of old neighbors and friends.---Thayer News
