He died March 14 1922 on their homestead, northeast of Hollis, Kansas, north of Concordia, Kansas, and is buried in Zion Cemetery, Republic County, Kansas. On October 26 1865 he married at the bride's home, near Bradford, Harrison County, Indiana to Mary Magdalene (Marilla) Deweese.
The 1850, 1860, 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records, his marriage record and his Civil War record all show his name as Shem Clark. Only the 1920 census shows his name to be Sherman Clark.

S. W. Clark, better known as Shem Clark, died at his home, near Hollis last Tuesday morning, about 9:15 after having suffered from an attack of pneumonia, of about one week's duration. Mr. Clark was one of the early settlers of this county, having come here in 1868 and settled on a farm upon which he resided at the time of his death. He was born in Harrison County, Indiana, and was 78 years of age at the time of his death. He was an old soldier and a member of the local post of the G. A. R. which organization had charge of the funeral services, held this morning.
