Obituary (Benton Harbor News-Palladium, 8 Sep 1902, Monday):

“Mrs. Lydia Alcott Blakeslee, one of the most prominent residents of Galien, and widow of the late G. A. Blakeslee, died suddenly this morning [8 May 1902] at the family homestead in that village in the 73rd year of her life. She leave one son, the Hon. E. A. Blakeslee, former state senator, and six daughters.

The Blakeslee name is most prominently connected with the history of Galien. Mr. G. A. Blackeslee was the founder of the village in 1856 and he owned several thousand acres of land in Berrien County.

Miss Lydia Alcott, who was born in England, being the daughter of a manufacturer, of queensware, came to America, in her girlhood and settled in McHenry, IL., with her parents. On Feb. 13, 1848, she was married to Mr. George A. Blakeslee, who died September 30, 1890.

Nine children were born to them seven of whom survive, Mrs. Alexander Ferry, Mrs. W. W. Fry, Mrs. J. W. Wright, Mrs. Chas. A. Clark, Mrs. S. B. Smith, Mrs. W. A. Blair and Hon. Edwin A. Blakeslee.”
