Son of Robert Letson and Susanah McLain. He was a Confederate States of America veteran. Sethiel James was born in Georgia.
After the war all but one of his brothers and sisters moved to Alabama, but he chose to move to Florida instead. He raised seven children and is the progenator for many generations of Letsons living in Florida.

An article in a 1916 newspaper talked of a 79 year old S J Letson getting lost for over 2 days. When found, he claimed to not be lost, but did not know where he was. The heroics of several townspeople saved the life of "the old CSA soldier" that day and he lived another 8 years.
