Frederick was a farmer in Carthage, South Dakota during his early years. He lost his left hand in a corn sheller in 1908, and became active in other work after that. He served as county treasurer in Miner County between 1910 and 1915, worked at Howard National Bank from 1915 to 1919, and moved to Roswell, SD in 1919 to run the Roswell State Bank. He also sold insurance, and from about 1923 to the mid 60s, worked as a traveling salesman for Raleigh products. He was married to Augusta M. Frank in 1911, and they had five children. Some time after Augusta died Fred had a second marriage (no children) to Delvina Beck.
