Irene was the oldest child of Frederick A. Formanack and Augusta M. (Frank) Formanack, and the grand-daughter of Joseph and Barbara Formanack, who were among the earliest settlers in the Dakota Territory (Richland County, ND - 1871) and who came to Miner County, SD, in 1885.
Irene attended grade school in Roswell and graduated from Fedora High School in 1930. During the WPA years she coordinated seamstresses in the Roswell area. She married George Burkhart on November 17, 1936, in Sioux Falls, SD; the couple resided in that city for 6 years, while George worked as a mechanic. In 1942 they moved to Layton, Utah where George was involved in the construction of wartime facilities at Hill Air Base. About 1944 they moved to Seaside, Oregon, where George was again employed as an auto mechanic. Irene continued to live in Seaside after George passed away in 1981, and worked part-time through her mid-80s providing domestic services to homes in the Seaside and Cannon Beach area. One of her favorite activities (in addition to candy making and keeping track of happenings across the community via her police scanner) was crocheting and rug hooking, which she pursued with great talent. She won a number of awards for the beautiful rugs she created. She was a long-time member of the congregation at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Parish, in Seaside, where she was an active participant in church activities until December of 2006. At that time, when she was in her 95th year, she became unable to continue her independent lifestyle, and moved to an adult foster home in Astoria, where she was loved and well cared for until her passing in 2010.
