"Mr. Morris (John) was born in Somersetshire, England, May 26, 1816. His father's family held some property, and they were well connected, but none of the benefits of birth or wealth ever came to his help. There were six children, and he was the third son. Only one brother, Charles, and a sister, Caroline – now Mrs. Harris, of Oswego – are now living.
His father and the family came to America in 1840, arriving in New York July 3d. They came to Ohio, where the subject of this sketch bought a farm near Cleveland.

In 1851, Mr. Morris and family came to Illinois by the way of the lakes to Chicago, and thence by teams to Mercer county, where they settled, near Keithsburg. His father died here in 1856, in his sixty-eighth year; and his mother, whose maiden name was Sarah Brewer, died in 1864, at the age of eighty-one."

"After living in Mercer county five years, Mr. Morris moved to Warren county, but again returned to Mercer county in 1865, and bought a farm, on section 9, Greene township, to which he has since added by purchase other land in the vicinity of Viola. Their children named in the order of their ages, are: Victoria M., wife of Jonathan Tracy, living near New Windsor, Mercer county; Edwin and Edmond, who are twins, and the latter married and in Greene township; George W.R., Clara, now teaching in Warren county; Eugene C.; Elwood, Jr.; Ida S.; and Cora M. Besides the above-named, three sons and one daughter have been buried in infancy."

His parents were William and Sarah Brewer Morris. His brother, Charles Morris, is buried in Jackson Greer Cemetery.
