J.G. Schmiedt Succumbs At Family Home
John George Schmiedt, 79, resident of Lodi for the past 21 years, succumbed to an extended illness at the family home on Flora street Saturday morning.
He was born in Dennewitz, Bessarabia, South Russiam on August 15, 1857.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothea Schmiedt, and the following children: John J. Schmiedt, Lodi; Mrs. Nellie Greenberg, Castroville; Fred Schmiedt, Modesto; Dave Schmiedt, Stockton; Mrs. Helen Daly, Lodi; Guss Schmiedt, Manteca; Mrs. Sophie Bendix, French Camp; Mrs. Bertha Anderson, Manteca; Miss Daisy Schmiedt, Lodi.
Four brothers and three sisters also survive. They are Fred, Henry, Emanuel Schmiedt, of Tripp, South Dakota; Julius Schmiedt, Lodi; Mrs. Christine Kludt, Mrs. Caroline Kludt and Mrs. Rosa Waneke, all of Tripp, South Dakota.
In addition, Mrs. Schmiedt leaves 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The deceased was married to Dorothea Fode in Russia on September 1, 1878, and they came to America a month later, settling in South Dakota. They resided there for 13 years and then moved westward to Oregon where they remained until 1896, when Mr. Schmiedt brought his family to California.
Twelve children were born to that union, nine of whom are still living.
Remains are in charge of Hale and Bawden. Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Emanuel Lutheran church, corner of Central Avenue and Hilborn Streets. Interment will be in the Lodi Cemetery.
