John Gable was born to James Elisha Gable and Margaret Dorcas Barnes. He was about five years old when the Gable family relocated from Buchanan County, Missouri, to Oklahoma, settling near Harrah. He served in the Army in World War I and after coming home married Velma Gunnells in 1919. They had a son but divorced after five years and he remarried to Clara Ramsey, with whom he had another son. After years of working for railroads when World War II was on the horizon John went to California where he found employment in the shipyards. He stayed out west and after divorce from Clara he remarried for the final time to Esther Lucero, otherwise known as 'Nonie.'
