BOONSBORO - Richard Allen Hargett, 69, of 112 Maple Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 30, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 22, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John H. Hargett and Esther May Bussard Hargett.
He was a retired employee of Washington County Water Plant and was a self-employed master plumber.
He was past assistant mayor of Boonsboro and was a former superintendent of Boonsboro Utilities Commission.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army. He served with Co. M, 152nd Infantry in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in the Battles of the Philippines, New Guinea and Luzon. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was a member of Washington Square Methodist Church of Hagerstown.
He was a member and past commander of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion of Boonsboro; and a member of AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Cyril Manzella "Zella" Boyd Hargett; one daughter, Anna May Hargett of Clear Spring; one son, Richard Alan Hargett of Lithonia, Ga.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Edna Irene Hargett; and two brothers, Ernest L. Hargett and Cleveland J. Hargett.
Services will be at 10:30a.m. Wednesday at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro. The Rev. Dean Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
