When Josephine Einhellig was born on June 8, 1864, in Richland Grove, Mercer, Illinois, her father, Jacob, was 29 and her mother, Christina, was 27. Around 1875 the family moved to Wyandotte County, Kansas. At the age of seventeen, Josephine moved in with the Elu family and worked as their cook. A year later she fell in love and married William Irvin Ellis on May 5, 1881, in Wyandotte, Kansas. She had four children by the time she was 24. She died as a young mother on April 22, 1890, in Wyandotte, Kansas, at the age of 25, and was buried there in the Maywood Cemetery along with one of her sons Mount Vernon.
