JOE H. TSCHETTER
Joe H. Tschetter was born Nov. 2, 1901 to Jacob H. and Mary Tschetter on a farm 10 miles southwest of Bridgewater, S. D., the oldest of six children.
My earliest Christian training was at home, where Bible stories and other religious instruction made an impression on my life, and in Sunday School. After completing the 8th grade I attended Freeman Academy and graduated in 1926.
I saw the need of being regenerated under the ministry of Frank V. Wiebe. My father helped me to make this decision. I was baptized by Elder Jacob M. Tschetter and accepted into the K.M.B. Church of Bridgewater. I served as secretary of the Sunday school for six years, taught an adult Sunday school class for 25 years, was chairman of C.E. programs for a few terms, and served on the board of deacons.
In 1935 I was married to Mary Walter by Rev. D. W. Tschetter at the church. We started a family altar and shared our problems and blessings. We farmed in the vicinity of Emery until 1964 when we retired and moved to Emery. Here I spent my leisure time doing wood craft, which brought many people to our home. In later years I felt a lameness in my feet which advanced and made it hard for me to get around, but I had no pain. This did not keep me from making myself useful. Good music and reading always gave me much satisfaction.
My favorite scriptures are Psalm 27, John 14:1-3, and romans 10:9. The last three years I was confined to the wheelchair, but that did not keep me from working or going to church.
(The above portion of the obituary was written by Mr. Tschetter.
On July 17, 1973 he entered the Freeman Hospital with double pneumonia. On July 20 God called him Home. He reached the age of 71.
He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Mary; two brothers, Jake of Fairmont, Minna and Sam of Ketchican, Alaska; three sisters-in-law, Arpa, Mrs. Jake H. Tschetter, Anna, Mrs. Wm. R. Tschettter of Dolton, S. D., and Norma, Mrs. San Tschettter
His father and mother, one sister, Barbara, and two brothers William and Willard, preceded him in death.
