Joseph Fry was born into a family of wealthy and orthodox Quakers in 1777. The family business dealt in colonial wares, and in 1800 Joseph married the strong-willed Elizabeth Gurney, who became famous as a philanthropist and prison reformer. The couple had eleven children. In 1808 he started his own bank, and the following year moved his family from London to the more salubrious environment of Essex. The bank went bust in 1828, forcing the Frys to downsize to a smaller property in West Ham. Joseph supported his wife's philanthropic activites, although she felt that it put a strain on their marriage. Elizabeth Fry died in 1845 - when Joseph passed away sixteen years later, having reached the respectable age of eighty-four, he was buried in ther same grave at the Quaker burial ground, Barking, Essex.
