Archie Crews, 84, of the Hickox Community, died Wednesday evening (Feb. 23, 2005) in the BayView Nursing Home in Nahunta after a long illness.

Born November 14, 1920 in Brantley County, formerly Wayne County, he was the son of Ben J. and Emmie Crews Crews.

A Baptist by faith, he was a farmer and logger for many years before he retired. He had also served in the U.S. Army for several years and was an avid hunter and fisher and loved to pull pranks, a honorary member of the Magnolia Bluff Hunting Club, The Walter Field Hunting Club, Hayner Pasture Hunting Club and was a charter member of the Hickox Community Fishing Club, a past board member of the FSA and Family and Children Services. Mr. Archie was also known as the Gate Keeper at the Brantley County High School during games for 25 plus years, he loved any high school sports, his favorite being basketball. He will be greatly missed by family and the Brantley County Community.

He was preceded in death by a son, Floyd Crews; his stepmother, Ethel Crews, two brothers, Plen and Cager Crews. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 plus years, Florrie Johns Crews, of Nahunta; one daughter, Shirley A. Herrin of Nahunta; three sons, Johnnie Crews and Gene Crews (Judy), both of Nahunta, and Jerry Crews (Karen) of Auburn, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, Tony Crews (Tracy) of Douglas, Jackie Smith (Byron) of Nahunta, Jeanna Weldon (Mickey) of Tifton, Jeremy Crews (Lori) of Nahunta, Josh Crews (Stephie) of Auburn, Ala., Justin Crews, of Auburn, Ala., Ronda Ingram, of Nahunta, Buffy Herrin, Randy Herrin and Gerold Herrin all of Nahunta; eight great-grandchildren, Allie Crews, Jill Smith, Aubrey Smith, Logan Smith, Anna and Macy Weldon, Sierra and Kelsey Ingram; one sister, Loraine Crews of Yulee, Fla.; one brother Willie Crews (Mary) of Orlando, Fla.; also several Nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will start at 6 tonight at the funeral home. A funeral will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. from the Chambless-Frye Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Reggie Herrin and the Rev. E.C. Crews officiating.

Entombment will follow at the Bethlehem Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Walker, Benny, Doug, Gary, Tim and Thomas Crews.

Arrangements are with Chambless-Frye Funeral Home of Nahunta.
