Mary was the daughter of Thomas Luster and Sarah M. Knight. She was raised with brothers Thomas, William and George, and sisters Laura and Alice. A brother, James, died in infancy.
Mary married David Maxwell Phillips on December 23, 1885. Their only child, Ila Minnie, was born in 1891. After Mary's death when Ila was two years old, Mary's parents raised the child. It is believed that Mary's husband died shortly after Mary, although this is unconfirmed at this time.
