"It appears from the Rolls on file in this office, that David Kugler was enrolled on the 17th day of September 1861, at Lehighton, Pa in Co. I, 81st Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, to served 3 years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 15th day of October 1861, at Washington D.C. in Co I 81st Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. I of that Regiment for the months of November & December 1861, he is reported. Died in Hospital at Washington D.C. Dec 6, 1861.

"I am, Sir, very respectfully your obedient servant, /s/ Samuel Neck, Assistant Adjutant General." The Commissioner of Pension, Washington D.C. Memoranda. Name of applicant, Lydia Kugler, address Mauch Chunk, Pa.

State of Pennsylvania, Lydia Kugler, widow of David Kugler, Rank Private Company I, Regiment 81st Pa., Vols, Philadelphia Agency. Rate per month $8 Commencing 6th Dec. 1861. Certificate dated 31st Aug. 1863 and sent to Thos. L. Foster, Mauch Chunk Pa.

I do hereby certify: That David Kugler who was a Private in said Company was taken sic at Camp Good Hope in the District of Columbia with the Typhoid Fever, that he was removed to Saint Elizabeth Hospital in the city of Washington D.C. in the latter part of November or the first of December 1861, and that he died in said Hospital on the 6th day of December 1861. That the disease was as above stated and that it was contracted by the said David Kugler while in the service of the United States and in the line of his duty." /s/ D.J. Phillips, Capt. Co. I 81st Reg. Pa. Vols. Camp New Warrenton Junction, Va. July 29th 1863.

Eichenberg to me well known and who being duly sworn according to law deposes and says that he is now and was on the thirteenth day of April A.D. 1856 a regularly ordained and officiating clergyman of the German Reformed Church and that on the said thirteenth day of April A.D. 1856 David Kugler and Lydia Kemerer were by me united in marriage according to the rites of said church and the laws of the state of Pennsylvania and further that the said David Kugler is the same person who was a Private in Captain William J. Comus Company I in the 81st Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers who it is said died at Washington in the District of Columbia on the 6th day of December A.D. 1861 of disease contracted in the service of the United States, and that Lydia Kugler who is an application for pension and whose claims I am informed is number 11,139 is now the widow of said David Kugler, deceased. /s/ C.G. Eichenberg. – Sworn and subscribed before me this fourth day of August A.D. 1863. County Clerk.
