Mrs. Mary Copley Thaw, philanthropist, head of one of Pittsburgh's most prominent families, died at 5:20 a.m. of pneumonia, after a few days' illness. She was within five days of her eighty-seventh birthday.

She was the daughter of Josiah Copley, a pioneer editor, and the widow of a Pittsburgher who figured largely in the development of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Her lifetime philanthropic gifts totaled $6,000,000. She donated the marble reredos, with mosaic angels, in Henry Hobson Richardson's Emmanuel Episcopal Church, on the North Side of Pittsburgh, in memory of her husband.
