Dr. Eva Heller was born in Esslingen am Neckar and grew up in nearby Ludwigsburg. She was the daughter of an attorney, Ernst Heller, and Maria Schmidt.

She studied sociology and psychology at the Free University of Berlin and eventually took her doctorate, but gained fame as the author of the novel "Beim Naechsten Mann Wird Alles Anders" [With the Next Man, Everything Will Be Different], a seminal comic romance which satirically addressed the women's movement, German student life, and bourgeois culture.

The book went to the top of the German bestseller lists in 1987 and was translated into eighteen languages. It was subsequently made into a hit movie starring Antje Schmidt, Dominic Raake, and Volkert Kraeft and directed by Xaver Schwarzenberger. Her subsequent three novels, published in 1993, 1997, and 2004, were also bestsellers.

An expert on color theory, which she had used in her early work as a marketing executive, Heller wrote several nonfiction books on color and its cultural implications, including one for children. Before writing her novels, she was best known for her cartoons, which took a wry view of relationships between men and women.

Heller married the sociologist Dieter Prokop in December, 1990 after a long romance. He was a professor at the Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe University in Frankfurt on Main, Germany, where Heller had obtained her own doctoral degree. Prokop was to be a strong supporter of Heller in her creative life. They maintained separate apartments throughout their marriage so that each had a private space for work or relaxation, but spent time together every day.

A heavy smoker for most of her life, Heller had a massive stroke in January of 2005, and became confined to a wheelchair. She died of complications from the stroke on January 31, 2008 at the age of 59.

A biography of Heller by her husband was published by Tectum Press of Marburg, Germany in August, 2010.

Gravesite Details

The headstone, which is topped by a sculpture of a woman's hand holding a pen, originally belonged to the author, and was one of her favorite possessions. She found it at a flea market, and displayed it as a memento mori for the rest of her life.
