GUNMAN HUNTED AFTER WOMAN KILLED;
ESCORT WOUNDED IN SALT LAKE
Salt Lake City - A search continued today for a gunman who shot and killed Mrs. Bernice King, 36, Salt Lake City, Thursday night in an alley behind Clark's Cafeteria.
Richard Allen, 34, also of Salt Lake, suffered bullet wound injuries in the shooting fracas.
Mrs. King was dead on arrival at Cottonwood LDS Hospital. She suffered a gunshot wound in the head.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office said three shots were fired by the killer. Police set up a dragnet for the suspect, identified as Laurence Max Holt.
Officers said the man responsible for the shootings told friends and relatives in telephone conversations that he had shot the woman and planned to kill himself.
TELEPHONE CALL
Employees at the cafeteria said the victim had received a telephone call earlier in the evening and argued with the person she was conversing with.
Allen told deputies Mrs. King was afraid and asked him to walk her to her car about 9 p.m. Thursday. The gunman intercepted the couple and shot Mrs. King in the head and then wounded Allen.
The sheriff's office reported the gunman called them early this morning but officers failed to locate him.
"We just hope he's still in the county," a spokesman at the sheriff's office said.
******
She was the mother of six children. Holt turned himself in on April 16 and was arraigned on the 19th. Other newspaper accounts claim Holt entered the cafeteria and removed the victim by force. She broke away and ran, at which point the shooting occurred, and that Allen came upon the scene afterward.
Holt was convicted in July and sentenced on the 15th of August to life in prison.
