GULFPORT --- Mrs. Amelia Carrie Edwards Sullivan, 106, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Gulfport.
Mrs. Sullivan was the last child of a pioneer Gulf Coast family. She was born Nov. 13, 1894, to William Henry and Annie Louella Richards Edwards in Woolmarket, Miss. She graduated from the consolidated high school in Woolmarket and attended Normal College in Hattiesburg. She taught school in Harrison County and in Kentucky during the 1920s. Mrs. Sullivan was a resident of Anderson, S.C. where her late husband was mayor for many years. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Chuch where she taught the women's Bible class for 30 years and she was also a member of the sanctuary choir. She was active in the Anderson Chapter No. 130 of the Eastern Star and a member of the Beauvoir Chapter No. 621 of the UDC. Mrs. Sullivan moved back to Gulfport in 1980 and she was a member of the Coalville United Methodist Church in Woolmarket. In 1994, Jeff Lawson selected her as person of the week of WLOX in honor of her 100th birthday.
She is preceded in death by her husband, G. Cullen Sullivan; step-son, Lon Sullivan and step-daughter, Cullen Sullivan Moore. By her brothers, Elmer Edwards, Huff Edwards, and Henry Edwards. By her sisters, Mrs. Maye Dodge, Mrs. Emma Shove, Mrs. Bessie Simmons, Mrs. Celeste Beasley, Mrs. Winnie Crews, Miss Sudie Edwards and Mrs. Cassie Rouse.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, her extended family and her very special care givers, Christine and Bobby Darden.
Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, U.S. 49 North, Gulfport. A procession will leave at 1:40 p.m. for a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Coalville Cemetery in Woolmarket.
