Dorothy Maxine Martin, 88, of Eureka died at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at the Eureka Apostolic Christian Home.

She was born July 12, 1920, in Camp Point to Lawrence and Hulda (Rampley) McFarland. She married Edward Arlo Tanner in 1937. She then married Grover Eugene Wertz in 1945 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 1961. She later married James Peck Martin in 1968 in Woodland, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1973.

She also was preceded in death by one grandson, Stephen; and one sister, Ann Fletcher.

Surviving are two daughters, Beverly Kay Morrical of Washington and Marcia Lynn (Ron) Jacob of East Peoria; one son, David Lawrence (Ellen) Wertz of Bloomington; one stepson, James E. Martin of Charleston, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Sarah (Jonathan) Osmolski of Grayslake, Ill., Michael (Sara) Rohman of Chicago, Lisa (Mike) Ragan of Washington, Ryan Wertz of Peoria, Ashley Wertz of Bloomington, Josh Jacob of Morton, Seth (Jessica) Jacob of Bloomington, Jim Nearhoof of Bloomington, and Jessica Nearhoof of Bloomington; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Janet (Tony) Galisky of Joshua Tree, Calif.

Dorothy came to Peoria and worked for Sutliff Case Drug Store and the Peoria Cordage Co. on Washington Street on the assembly line, making rope in the 1940s. She then worked as a licensed practical private nurse in Peoria and Watseka and last cared for many babies and children in her licensed home day care center for 40 years.

She was a special mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was proud of her strength and integrity and sweet nature.

She loved flowers and was an excellent cook. She was the loving, teaching Grandma Martin.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Cremation will be accorded. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Yates City Cemetery at a later date.
