Ellen came to Key West in 1823, and was one of the first women settlers. During yellow fever outbreaks, she served as a nurse and she ran the town's only boarding house "Coconut Grove"

Her other claim to fame was as the mother of the Famous Stephen Russell Mallory who was born in 1812 in Trinidad and emigrated to Key West with his parents. He was a U.S. Senator from 1851 to 1861 and during the Civil War was Secretary of the Navy.
