In 1838 he was elected as Assemblyman for Warren County. For the years 1841 and '42 he was a supervisor for Chester. He joined the "Gold Rush '4 9" and settled not far from Sacramento, CA. His partner swindled him out of most of his savings and he went to live with his son Charles in Oroville, CA where he served as an early Justice of the Peace.
