Benjamin Franklin Martz died October 13, 1899, at the home of his daughter, Sarah Merket, in Reidsburg, Clarion County, at the age of 74 years.
Born May 27, 1825, in Northumberland County, he was a son of John and Mary (Weary) Martz.
Mr. Martz came to Ringgold Township in 1835 with his parents. He stayed at home helping work his father's farm until the age of 22 when he cleared and improved some farm land where he lived and worked until moving to North Freedom.
He married Catherine Shaffer on December 1847. She preceded him in death on December 1, 1896.
As a Democrat, he was active in public affairs including being councilman, supervisor, school director, tax collector and overseer of the poor.
He was a prominent and faithful member of the English Methodist Episcopal Church in Ringgold.
Mr. Martz is survived by the following children; John Martz of Emerickville, Daniel Martz, Mary Sherry and George Martz all of Ringgold Township and Sarah Merket of Reidsburg, Clarion County.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his children; Franklin in 1880, Ida in 1883, Amos in 1886, Lucetta in 1889 and Katherine in 1894,
Mr. Martz was blessed with 41 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, six of whom preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at Ringgold Methodist Church followed by interment at Ringgold Cemetery.
