(special thanks to LC-NW for the following obituary and information) The obituary for Seth, City Gazette (Charleston, SC), dated Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1810, page 2, notes that he was a native to Bermuda. I suspect that his father was Jeremiah Yates (also a ship's captain) but I'm not certain yet. Incidentally, Boaz Island in Bermuda used to be called "Yates Island".

"Died on Saturday morning, the 3rd inst. Mr. SETH YATES, Shipright, aged 59 years ; a native of the Island of Bermuda, but a resident of this, his adopted country, for 40 years past. During our struggle for independence, he was a active volunteer, and rendered many signal services to this State. He was an affectionate husband, fond indulgent parent, and humane master. The regret testified by his mourning relatives and friends, bespeak his many virtues."
