He was in the U. S. Army in World War II. He served in the South Pacific.

Ralph "Larry" Lambert was the son of Leonard Elijah Lambert and his first wife, Elsie Leone Koke. He lived in Minnesota for 45 years before moving to California.

He worked in a bank for a long time, then for a telephone company in Lafayette, California, outside of San Francisco. He retired in Lafayette. He never married.

He used the name "Larry." In a letter dated 25 Mar 1999 he explained as follows:
"As to my using the nickname 'Larry' it is one of those pointless little incidents that go on forever. I wrote a column in the high school paper that was supposed to be anonymous, and in wondering aloud what I should use as an author's name, someone said, 'What was your name in that play you were in last semester?' And I said I was Larry the Western Union boy, and that started it. When I went away to the University of Iowa in 1937, my assigned roommate had apparently had someone he once knew named Ralph whom he couldn't stand, so he asked if I had a nickname -- which I just barely had -- so he decided to call me 'Larry.' He was a freshman, and had been in Iowa City for a week of freshman orientation before I got there (I entered as a Junior) and as it happened he introduced me to a lot of people I knew all my time in Iowa City, and since the alliteration seemed easy to remember, I more or less became 'Larry' from then on except when signing legal papers."
