Son of John & Mary McSwain Nicholson who moved from S. C. to Pike Co., Georgia about 1826. He had 2 brothers, Daniel (1825-ca. 1853) and Peter Nicholson (1827-1912), and 2 sisters, Elizabeth Rose Crawley (1820-1900), and Margaret (1829-Unk).

James married Harriett Caudle, December 17, 1856 in Troup Co., Georgia They initially lived in Meriwether Co., Georgia, but moved around to Spalding, Troup, Haralson counties. James was a teacher. During the Civil War James served from July 1862 to April 1865 with Company "B", 26th Battalion, Georgia Volunteers. For his service, Harriett received a Widow's Indigent Pension after she filed in 1901.

James and Harriett had 8 children, 5 boys & 3 girls: Emma, Lorenzo Dow, Herschel Virgil John, Walter Scott, Eulolia, Hattie, James Alvis, & Wade Hampton.
