Polly Reniff Payne is listed by various online records as having been born to James Reniff and Mary Cook on February 2, 1820 in Massachusetts. This information is supported by most US Census records and by her gravestone, which provides her name, birth, and death as "Polly Reniff Payne, 1820 - 1905". Polly's given name may have been "Mary."

Payne family records indicate that Polly married Almon Payne in Buckland, Franklin County, in western Massachusetts. This marriage likely took place before 1839, since her oldest child Elliot Payne is listed as having been born in Stockton, Chautauqua County, western New York on September 25, 1839. Family records provide the names of 11 children born to Almon and Polly Payne. Of those 11 children, 7 were still living at the time of Polly's death in 1905. For details on Polly Reniff Payne's children and migration west to Wisconsin and Minnesota, see notes on her husband Almon Payne. It should be noted that Polly's elderly mother Mary (sometimes listed as Polly) Reniff accompanied Polly and Almon Payne's family on their moves, and, acccording to Hamilton Cemetery records died in 1867 and was buried at that cemetery.

After the death of Almon Payne on January 4, 1895 at the home of her daughter Mary (Payne) Farnsworth and family in Hamilton, Minnesota, Polly Payne appears to have lived out the remaining decade of her life with her children. At the time of the 1895 Minnesota census (enumerated June 12, 1895) in Racine Township, Mower County, Minnesota, Polly Payne appears to be widowed and living with her son Luther Payne and his family. By the time of the 1900 census, the 80 year-old widowed Polly Payne can be found living with her son George Payne and five of his children in the village of Lakefield in Jackson County in southwestern Minnesota, where she subsequently died on July 15, 1905. The following brief obituary of Polly (Reniff) Payne appeared on page 5, column 6 of the July 18, 1905 edition of the Spring Valley Sun [Spring Valley, Fillmore County, Minnesota]:

"Mrs. Polly Payne, who died at Lakefield Saturday, July 15, 1905, and whose remains were shipped to Grand Meadow for burial, was 85 1/2 years of age. Cause of death was general debility caused from old age. The deceased leaves a family of seven children. The remains were taken from Grand Meadow to Racine, where the funeral services were held on Monday at the Baptist church, the interment taking place at the Hamilton cemetery at Hamilton."
