Sergeant Brian Johnson passed away in his home at Fort Drum in Northern New York.

Brian was born in Kingsburg, CA. He graduated the football hero from Hanford High School in 1995. Brian then went on to play football for two years for the College of the Sequoias in Visalia.

Shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, Brian felt compelled to join the United States Army. He was able to quickly work his way up the ranks from private to specialist and was admired by all no matter the rank or position. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003-2004.

Shortly after returning home he met his soul mate Nikki in September 2005 and instantly fell in love and eloped to Chicago on February 11, 2006. Brian was then deployed to Afghanistan where he served in Operation Enduring Freedom from 2006-2007.

Brian was so proud to be a soldier and took whatever was given him with honor and humility. After serving for six years, Brian was due to be medically discharged from the Army in mid-2009. Brian and Nikki were looking forward to moving to California after that and start a new chapter to their story.

Brian had recently decided that he was going to get a degree in psychiatry in the hopes of counseling returning soldiers who were experiencing the same things that he had gone through. He was such a compassionate and gentle individual with a burly and tough guy exterior. Brian was a positive and happy person despite all of the pain and sorrow he had seen in his short life. He had the ability to talk to anyone and instantly make them feel comfortable; there was hardly a person who knew Brian who didn't love and respect him immediately. Despite all of the setbacks on his path, Brian was always able to keep moving forward with unbelievable strength and relentless tenacity.

Brian was so loved and admired by his supportive group of family and friends.

Brian is survived by his devoted wife, Nikki Johnson; his Mom and Dad, Reba and Bruce Ryan of Hanford; father-in law and mother- in-law, Jerry and Rose Rust of Brownsburg, Indiana; grandparents Roy and Joanna Dudley of Reedley and grandmother, Elaine Johnson of Visalia; sister-in-law, Christina Johnson; nephew and niece, Curtis and Aubrey of Lemoore; brothers-in-law, Brandon Rust (Julie), and Jared Rust (Jessie) all of Indianapolis, Indiana. He will also be greatly missed by his Uncle Hank Dudley and Suzanne Dudley, Aunt Rhonda Silva and Randy Silva, Aunt Tracy Trevino and Vince Trevino, Aunt Suzanne Johnson, MD and Kathy Foster and multiple cousins and friends who appreciated all that he was.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arnold Johnson, his father, Gordon Johnson and his brother, Gregory Johnson.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28 at Phipps-Dale Funeral Chapel in Lemoore. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28 at Phipps-Dale Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at the Lemoore Cemetery.

Friends who wish can make donations in Brian's memory to Wounded Warrior Project, in memory of Brian Johnson, 7020 AC Skinner Pkwy, Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
