Pioneer Resident Of Big Hole Dies Saturday

A pioneer resident of the Big Hole Basin, Amy Stephens died Saturday morning at Livingston, Mont., following an extended illness.

Mrs. Stephens was born Aug. 12, 1883 at HElena, and moved to the Big Hole Basin in 1886.

A descendant of the Armitages and Noyes, first settlers of the Big Hole (her uncle, A. J. Noyes, wrote the autobiography published in Montana). She was married to David J. Stephens at the Armitage ranch at Briston, in the Big Hole, Sept. 15, 1901.

Mr. and Mrs. Stephens ran the first Briston post office in the Big Hole and she lived in the Big Hole Valley 83 years before entering the Parkview Acres Nursing Home, then transferring to the Livingston Nursing Home.

She was a member of the Church of the Big Hole Women's Club, the church of the Big Hole and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Christian of Billings; Amy and Hallie Stephens of Livingston; a son, Argyl Stephens of Dillon, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Church of the Big Hole in Wisdom with Rev. Marion Horton officiating. Interment will be in the Briston Cemetery.
