He was the son of Lee and Birdie (Lewis) Ledgerwood. He grew up in the Milburn area where he graduated from high school in 1947. He joined the United States Navy in 1948 and had a military career for more than 20 years, during which time he served in the Korean War and the Viet Nam War. He married Freda M. Ward on Dec. 20, 1949, in Tishomingo. Because of his military career they lived in many different places over the next 20 years. After retirement from the Navy they settled in McAlester in 1968. He then went to work for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections working at the state penitentiary in McAlester as a medical technician in the Medical Research Center. He then went to work for the Oklahoma Tax Commission as a field auditor, reviewing all tag agents in this part of the state. He had also worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart and had helped his daughter and son-in-law in their business, ABE Office Supplies. He was also very active in the Order of the Eastern Star Antha Homa No. 2 for many years. He was a member of the McAlester Scottish Rite Temple and the South McAlester Blue Lodge 96 and the Blue Lodge 261 in Beeville, Texas, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He had also been active in the West Kiowa Senior Citizens group for several years. He was an Oklahoma University football fan and enjoyed watching films of past games. He could always be found wherever one of his grandchildren was involved in some event. He was a longtime member of the Second Baptist Church of McAlester. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, James A. "Bucky" Ledgerwood, of McAlester, and Larry and Brenda Ledgerwood, Murray, Ky.; one daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Steve Boatner, of McAlester. Also, five grandchildren, Wade Ledgerwood and his wife, Kara, Misty Sievers and her husband, Scott, Destin Ledgerwood, Trent Boatner and his wife, Melinda, and Travis Boatner; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Ledgerwood, and Miles and Ella Kate Sievers. And, one sister, Opal Campbell, Huntington Beach, Calif.; sister-in-law, Sue Ward, of Tishomingo, and special friends, Lois Kannady, of McAlester, and Jerri and Joe Praytor, of McAlester. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on Feb. 14, 2000, and a brother, Olen "Bud" Ledgerwood. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Second Baptist Church of McAlester. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
