Joseph was born to Charles Morris and Martha Elizabeth Harvey Grammer. After reaching his majority, he went to his sister's home in Clinton, Missouri where he learned the carpentry trade. He and his brother Frank came to Buffalo County where they bought a farm, lived in a sod house, and worked at various jobs for the next 6 years.
He met Louise Doon at a Literary at the Bentora (Hazard) schoolhouse. After their marriage in 1893 they lived in Pleasanton where their five children were born.
Joseph died December 18, l905.
