John enlisted at age 18 at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Mo as a private in Cpt. C.S. Moore's Co. 'C', 13th Regular Missouri Cavalry. He was permanently disabled by a shot to his left hand on Oct. 12, 1864, while on duty at Lexington, Mo.
He married Caroline Sullivan in 1863 and together they had ten children: Mary, Harvey, Hiram T., Thompson S., Howard, John P., Florence, Arthur A., Minnie & Elmer.
John was a minister of the United Baptist Church in Allendale. He and his family moved to Worth county in 1884.
John and his brother Thompson were married to the Sullivan sisters.
